Conclusion

Reviewing Unique Melody monitors is something I love to do and the MEXT certainly did not disappoint me.

The UM MEXT is a really nice IEM with a more fun approach, but it also has a good technical level. MEXT is always full bodied from top to bottom and the bass plays an important role in MEXT’s tuning.

The overall presentation is smooth and to the warmer side, and the top region is more rounded and softer. The MEXT will never sound offensive, but it always is musical, dynamic, and engaging. The dynamics, depth and layering are exception and the bone conduction with the new OBC is simply incredible.

The MEXT is a good all-rounder with a nice mix of technicalities and musical enjoyment. It doesn’t play at the technical level of the MEST series, but it will probably please the general crowd more. If you like the way we described the MESXT’s sound, you will absolutely love it. If, however, you prefer a more neutral, balanced and even better technically performing IEM, the MEST MKII is still the one to go for.

What I would love to see next from Unique Melody is a MEST MKIII, featuring the new OBC driver from the MEXT. Now that should be close to perfection.

OUR VERDICT

The Unique Melody MEXT is the company’s most confident and complete use of its bone conduction technology to date. This is a full-blooded tasty bass-centric performer with enough balance in the mids and vocals to please those who like their music to be beefy yet inviting.

Clearly, it’s not quite MEST levels in terms of treble extension and absolute clarity but then again I doubt that should be surprising given it’s a tier below their award-winning series and missing those electrostatic drivers.

However, I have a sneaking suspicion the OBC in the MEXT will show up again in either a 3rd gen of the MEST or something even higher-end down the road. It has some serious promise. For now, we get a glimpse of some solid potential in a value for money, highly enjoyable, and physically attractive custom monitor.
